Katikati wins Phelan Cup

The team known as Kati Tonga created its own special piece of Western Bay of Plenty rugby history when it won the Phelan Cup at Moore Park in Katikati at the weekend.

The final match of the Seeka KI Western BOP competition was played out before a large crowd of loud and passionate home supporters, who came in there droves.

Based mainly around a group of Tongan kiwifruit workers, the Katikati team faced a big challenge against a fired up Papamoa side. With neither team having won any Western Bay silverware this season, both teams had plenty to play for.

The game kicked off in wet miserable conditions, however, the two fired-up sides were impervious to anything the weather could throw at them.

A Papamoa mistake saw Sione Folaumoetoa kick a penalty goal before the visitors roared back into the encounter to lead 7-3 courtesy of a converted try.

Edgar Vakasiuola put Katikati back in front with a sizzling 30m touchdown before Papamoa dotted down late in the half.

The home side took a narrow 13-12 advantage into the halftime break

An early Katikati penalty stretched their lead to four with another Papamoa indiscretion adding a further three points. A back line move that went seventy metres resulted in Bluegum Roma score his side's second touchdown.

While Papamoa came back with a late try, the match belonged to Katikati which took out the hard fought encounter 21-17.

While the home side emerged victorious, they acknowledged the energy and commitment from the Papamoa side that made the match such a thrilling affair

The four teams which earned promotion from the Seeka KI Western BOP competitions had mixed results on Saturday.

In the division two playoffs, where the victor wins promotion to div one next season, Arataki posted 38 unanswered points to defeat Murupara, while Galatea defeated Matakana Island on the island. However, Matakana grabbed a semi-final place as the lowest points differential loser.

Defending Baywide Reserve champion Mount Maunganui made no race of its post section match defeating Poroporo Blue 115-5, while Tauranga Sports, which narrowly lost to Waikite 15-8, will also play in the semi-finals courtesy of their points differential.
