Baywide semi-finals action time

The business end of the 2011 Bartercard Baywide season has arrived with the red-hot action of Baywide semi-final rugby taking place this weekend.

Back in the early days of autumn, the contenders in the Baywide premier, division one and colts grades kicked off on their quest to play post section rugby, on the last Saturday in July.

The three season-long Baywide divisions were joined last weekend by the division two and senior reserve teams who have been playing regional rugby.

Taking centre stage will be the two Baywide premier top four encounters.

At the Tauranga Domain, defending champion Tauranga Sports will take on the Rotorua representative Whakarewarewa, while at Murray Salt Stadium in Te Puke, Te Puke Sports will face Western Bay rivals Mount Maunganui.

The match-up in Tauranga will see two coaches who come from different spectrums of the coaching ranks, vying to get their team to Baywide finals day on Super Saturday.

Mike Rogers is no stranger to the intensity of Baywide finals, having been a member of the Tauranga Sports sides who have won the last four Baywide premier titles.

However, the first season head coach, will find a completely different scenario sitting on the sideline watching his troops in action on Saturday.

While Whakarewarewa mentor Kevin Lee is in charge of the Puarenga Park based side for the first time this year, few Baywide club coaches can bring more coaching experience to top-level club rugby.

After his playing days for Waikite, Kevin had stints mentoring the Reporoa and Rotoiti senior teams.

In addition, Kevin has coached the Central Bay senior representatives and Bay of Plenty age group sides, to bring a wealth of rugby knowledge to the weekend's semi-final clash.

The Te Puke Sports versus Mount Maunganui game matches up two second season coaches.

Long time Te Puke Sports stalwart Jeremy Cotter, who is in charge of his club's premier team knows plenty about the intensity of Baywide finals rugby, having been there wearing the gold, black and red jersey.

Te Puke assistant coach Andy Miller is another that knows all about pressure in the game after an illustrious playing career.

Marty Bourke will need no more motivation to win this weekend than the memory of last year, when they fell at the last hurdle.

After leading 10-nil at halftime in the Baywide final, they could only watch as Tauranga Sports posted 19 unanswered points to grab the premier silverware.

Division one top qualifier Te Teko has had a single mission all season and that is to return to the premier ranks next season.

After being relegated last year the Eastern Bay side has been in rampant form all year. However, one of the few sides to lower the Te Teko colours was Katikati, who travel to the Eastern Bay to play the home side at Dunderdale Park.

Former Baywide heavyweight Ngongotaha, which won Baywide and Inter-City titles in seasons past, has a real challenge in the Western Bay of Plenty to make Super Saturday. Greerton Marist has made its base at Greerton Park a fortress all season and will be determined to progress to Baywide finals day after finishing second in the regular season competition.

In the division two playoffs, where the prize is a berth in next year's div one competition, Poroporo plays Matakana Island at home with Arataki hosting Galatea.

Defending senior reserve champions Mount Maunganui are at home at Blake Park to fellow Western Bay side Tauranga Sports, with Waikite and Ngongotaha engaging in a Rotorua local derby.
