Hockey’s elite battle in Tauranga

Bayleys Midlands are the winners of the Tauranga round of the National Hockey League tournament.

Bayleys Midlands hockey teams took on Auckland in the first round of the NHL at the Tauranga Hockey Centre, Blake Park and won 3-2.

Midlands' player Cathryn Finlayson scores in the 25th minute.

Auckland started the game with Katie Glynn scoring in the 20th minute, not long after Cathryn Finlayson scoring for Midlands.

The second half started well for Gemma Flynn, scoring in the fourth and eighth minutes.

Auckland fought back with Samantha Harrison scoring in the 24th minute, but that was not enough to beat the home team.

Organisers say it was an opportunity to see the region's Black Sticks playing for provincial pride.

In the men's match, the Midlands team also secured the win, although their game went to a penalty shootout. At the end of regulation time, the scores were locked at 3-3. Midlands men won the shootout 4-3.

This is the first round in a domestic competition featuring eight men's and eight women's teams from around New Zealand.

Each team is competing for their respective trophies: The Challenge Shield and The K Cup.

There are a total of six venues around the country planned for the tournament, with the main one being played in Wellington from August 6th until August 11th.
