Wild winds causes hoarding to collapse

The wild winds lashing the region have brought down a temporary hoarding erected at the Bayfair Shopping Centre.

Thankfully no-one was injured when the temporary hoarding, located on the Farm Street side of the Mount Maunganui shopping centre, collapsed at about 11.15am.

But a Bayfair local who sent SunLive a photo of the collapsed hoarding says it's lucky no-one was injured when the hoarding came down.

'There was a lady who was pushing a shopping trolley with a little boy in it, and she was the last one out when it happened. She only made it several steps then bang, it fell down,” says the local, who's asked not to be named.

'It's a bit of a mess.”

Bayfair Shopping Centre manager Steve Ellingford explains the temporary hoarding had been covering a sectional wall that's being re-clad, which shifted and has since been dismantled and removed.

He says it's believed the wind caught a section of the hoarding which has caused it to come down.

'We're taking the hoarding away now to be dismantled, and we'll re-erected once the weather calms down.

'But we're absolutely thankful no-one was hurt.”
