Te Arawa Group Holdings and Te Arawa Lakes Trust have signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), strengthening collaboration for the future of Te Arawa whānau.

On 6 February 2025, with the support of Te Pūmautanga o Te Arawa, the two entities formalised their commitment to working together through the signing of the MoU.

This significant agreement marks a new era of cooperation, reinforcing their shared whakapapa, history, and dedication to the wellbeing of Te Arawa whānau and hapū.

The MoU establishes a framework for collaboration on strategic initiatives that align with the aspirations of Te Arawa iwi. It is designed to honour the legacy of past leaders and Koeke while ensuring a prosperous and sustainable future for generations to come.

Te Arawa Lakes Trust Chairman Wallace Haumaha said the agreement was a momentous occasion for the iwi.

“On this significant Waitangi Day, we are proud to announce the historic signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Te Arawa Lakes Trust and Te Arawa Group Holdings,” said Haumaha.

He emphasised that the partnership reflected a collective commitment to upholding Te Arawa values while fostering growth in economic, environmental, and cultural areas.

“The MoU signifies a commitment to collaboration and mutual respect, laying the groundwork for initiatives that will benefit our people, preserve our language and traditions, and ensure sustainable practices for future generations,” Haumaha said.

The timing of the agreement, signed on Waitangi Day, was especially fitting, he added.

“It is fitting that we embark on this partnership on Waitangi Day, a day that symbolises our commitment to unity and the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi.”

Te Arawa Group Holdings Limited also acknowledged the importance of the agreement, highlighting its potential to strengthen iwi-led initiatives that would drive long-term benefits for Te Arawa.

With the backing of Te Pūmautanga o Te Arawa, the collaboration aims to uphold tikanga while fostering growth and development in alignment with iwi aspirations.

“This MoU signifies a new era of strategic cooperation, ensuring that the legacy of Te Arawa leaders continues to thrive for generations to come,” Haumaha said.

The agreement marks a significant milestone in the ongoing journey of Te Arawa, demonstrating a unified vision for the future—one that honours the past while paving the way for future prosperity.
