People are being evacuated in the Eastern Bay of Plenty as flooding continues in the region.
Whakatane District Council says Edgecumbe township is being evacuated.
"Please evacuate to friends or family in Whakatane we are setting up welfare centres and details will follow. Please contact friends and family in the area and check on your neighbours."
Welfare centres have been set up at the Whakatane Salvation Army and War Memorial Hall in Whakatane.
While the severe weather has moved off the region, many areas are dealing with the aftermath of yesterday's deluge.
According to the latest tweet from the NZ Fire Service, firefighter responded to 584 emergency 111 calls in a 24 hour period.
'We have responded to 348 weather related incidents across NZ over this period,” the Fire Service tweeted.
The council says the Whakatane District is still dealing with high river levels, slips and flooding.
State Highway 2, in the Waioeka Gorge, is closed due to a washout and slip. People are being asked to avoid unnecessary travel.
SH38, at Murupara, is also closed due to a slip.
SH34, from Edgecumbe to Teko, is closed due to flooding as is SH30 and SH2 from Rotorua to Opotiki.
