Heavy early morning downpours caused flooding on Saturday that saw a Sherwood Street house flooded.

MetService forecaster Lisa Murray says the heaviest rain was early Saturday morning.

'Wow. There was one hour that you got 18.2mm at the airport, that's quite heavy for one hour, but the rest of it has just been ticking over, may be two hours for what we call heavy falls. Once you have got over about 6mm, we consider it heavy.”

The Tauranga airport rain gauge recorded rainfall of 18.2mm between 4-5am.

There was 6.6mm the following hour and then 16.4mm from the 6am to 7am period.

Later in the day, from noon until 1pm, there was a 7.8mm, says Lisa.

Total rain from midnight Friday until midnight Saturday was 75.4mm

'There has been little bits and pieces since, but that's only going add 3mm to it.

'That stuff in the morning, that's pretty heavy. Usually whey you see that you get service flooding, streams rising rapidly.”

Looking ahead, tomorrow there's a chance of fog in the morning, which will affect a lot of the country, and there could be some showers about in the afternoon.

Wednesday morning there could be some showers, but the temperature is expected to get to 18 degrees in the afternoon, says Lisa.

'Tomorrow is a little cooler with an expected high of 16. Overnight lows are down to 8-9 degrees over the next few days.”

So where did all the millions of rates money collected specifically for flood prevention go to? Looks like the flooding is still happening.
