A memorial ride event planned by a local motorcycle club has ended in arrests after those involved were monitored by police.
On Saturday morning a group of motorcyclists were travelling toward Tauranga on State Highway 2 at Katikati.
Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion says the group had been observed speeding and overtaking on double yellow lines, and in one instance a motorist travelling in the opposite direction had been forced to take evasive action.
'Police consequently stopped this group and arrested two male motorcyclists with gang links for dangerous driving,” he says.
'They will appear in the Tauranga District Court later this week. A third man was charged with driving while forbidden and his motorcycle was impounded for 28 days.”
He has been summoned to appear in the Tauranga District Court at a later date.
In a separate incident at approximately 9.30pm on Saturday, police checked the speed of a motorcyclist travelling on the Tauranga Eastern Link.
The reading showed he was travelling in excess of 180km/h, and when an officer stopped the rider a short time later on Kairua Road, it was discovered he was also not wearing a crash helmet.
The 23-year-old gang member has been charged with dangerous driving and driving while disqualified.
He had his motorcycle impounded for 28 days and is due to appear in Tauranga District Court on August 17.
'Taking these kinds of risks and ignoring the road rules is completely irresponsible driving and puts all road users lives in danger,” says Ian.
'Western Bay of Plenty Police will continue to crack down on moped and motorcycle riders carrying out high risk driving manoeuvres including speeding, undertaking vehicles on the left and overtaking on painted medians.
'We encourage all drivers to read up on their road rules, ensure they have a bike that is safe to use and wear the appropriate safety gear.”
He recommends all motorcyclists, whether travelling solo or in groups, need to ride defensively and avoid taking any risks on the roads.
'Remember, on a motorbike you are less visible and are far more likely to suffer injuries or worse in a crash, than people travelling in an enclosed vehicle.”

Surely by now the Police and NZTA know that making laws and so on will not stop gangs etc from driving as they want. It is no good bleating on about reading Road Rules, safe bikes and all that. They won't so they must just throw the book at them and hope for a tough judge. They probably won't get that either.
It's a start

At least they aren't ignoring them this time like I see a lot. How often do these guys ride past police on loud bikes wearing unapproved helmets etc with no action taken? They're usually up to no good so it would be a legal opportunity to check them over.

is all part of the egoism and law breaking mentality of the "biker gang" brigade.

Good on you Police. Throw the book at these arrogant bikies. They have absolute contempt for the law and deserve to be taken to account for their blatant law breaking.

I also see stupid Scooter riders undertaking on the cycle lane. What vehicle is expecting to have a motor cyclist charging up the inside. Not me, & I am a Motorcycle rider, & I take riders for their licensing. I also take training days to attempt to correct these stupid bad habits. I also agree the laws & rules are there to be broken & totally ignored by certain riders. About time something is done, & not just the bike riders, but the car drivers that think they are entitled to run RED lights, & block intersections on ORANGE lights.
Not giving way at roundabout

If these were the guys who passed through bayfair roundabout around 1:15pm Saturday, they didnt way to vehicles on the right, instead making traffic stop and back up while almost the whole stream went through without giving way, forcing cars to stop half way around the roundabout. :(

Yes, that's the gang way. They drive through roundabouts like that to demonstrate how stupid they are in case we had forgotten. They don't want to get detached from their boyfriends, so keep in convoy. If they became detached they might forget where they are going. It also gives them a sense of importance and makes them feel big tough men. It's just a change of scenery from beating up women, kids and dogs.
