Pays to shop around for petrol

Petrol prices had a brief dip while the industry was under scrutiny, but they are back up again. File photo.

The price of petrol has risen after a brief dip that appeared to coincide with the release of a report of competiveness within the fuel industry.

The study, commissioned by Energy and Resources Minister Judith Collins earlier this year, suggests it has features which may not be consistent with a workably competitive market

According the AA website, the national price of fuel rose three cents per litre on September 6, bringing the price of 91 octane petrol to $2.05 per litre, although many service stations around the country continue to discount prices below that.

Speaking on RNZ's Morning Report earlier this month, Judith Collins suggested fuel companies have increased petrol prices after dropping them around the release of her ministry's investigation into the fuel industry.

'I noticed a significant drop coincided with the release of the report, while they increased during the school holidays.

'It is a very serious issue. Every one cent in margin increase takes $30 million from buyers of diesel and petrol and puts it into the hands of sellers.”

SunLive visited a small sample of local petrol stations on September 14 to find out what motorists might be paying at the pump. See below for the results, and be sure to let us know if you've seen it cheaper – or wildly more expensive.

The free smartphone app, Gaspy, shows current fuel prices in the area you are, no driving around needed. I think the app was developed by a Tauranga company

Park up your BP/AA fuel discount card and shop at Gull. Even after the so called discount (read builtin extra profit margin) Gull is cheaper and more honest. The displayed price is real price.

Gaspy is great

When 50% of the population has an EV, petrol will be as cheap as chips and service stations will be stocking more grocery lines and selling more coffee and pastries.
