There's been three undersea earthquakes offshore from White Island overnight, reports GeoNet.

The latest was at 1.18am this morning when a magnitude 2.8 earthquake at 7km depth located 10km north east of the volcano.

Seismologist Brad Scott at GNS Science Wairakei says while the earthquakes are referenced to White Island as the nearest land, they are not actually associated with the volcano.

The largest in the series so far was at 11.24pm last night a magnitude 4.1 at a depth of 9km located 15km north east of the volcano.

It was preceded at 11.22pm by a magnitude 3.5 quake at a depth of 7km, in the same location.

White Island's alert level is 1, indicating minor volcanic unrest.

A further report on the earthquakes is expected later today on the GNS website.

The subducting pacific seafloor makes its way under NZ from east to west, therefore quakes this side of teh subduction zone, perhaps 200 km deep and 200km west all relate.
