UPDATED: Trains have been stopped from crossing the railway bridge while firefighters deal with a scrub fire near the tracks.

It's believed to have started in a homeless shelter, says Fire and Emergency NZ northern communications centre shift manager Andrew Norris.

'It's a homeless shelter on fire across the railway tracks.

'We have called in a second pump and we have stopped the trains.”

Firefighters from Mount Maunganui were first on the scene.

It's understood police have been called to the scene as well.
