A mountain biker has been rushed to hospital after being seriously injured in a crash.
The BayTrust Rescue Helicopter was called to Whakarewarewa Mountain Bike Park, where a 17-year-old male had serious injuries after crashing his bike.
A spokesperson says a fellow rider raised the alarm when he discovered the injured biker yesterday afternoon.
'He was flown to Waikato Hospital in a serious but stable condition.” Prior to this callout, the BayTrust Rescue Helicopter was called to Ruautahuna, where a 69-year-old man was suffering from chest pains.
'He was stablised by the onboard paramedic and then flown to Rotorua Hospital for further treatment.”

People can choose to take part in dangerous activities in remote places and they will be rescued by a free helicopter service? What I find disappointing is that while the helicopters are tied up rescuing people who CHOOSE to take part in risky passtimes.... resources and manpower is diverted from what the helicopters are there for... assisting people who aren't blatantly putting themselves at risk... people having medical problems etc. It might be time to start charging people for the 'free helicopter ride' if they injure themselves doing dangerous things by choice?
