In today's Tui cricket weather forecast for the Blackcaps v England match there is a chance of evening showers.

This day in NZ history in 1945 a Kiwi soldier faced a firing squad. After more than a year on the run in northern Italy, New Zealand prisoner of war David Russell was recaptured and executed.

His courage in the face of death earned him the first George Cross awarded to a member of New Zealand's military.

This day in world history in 1066 Westminster Abbey, the most famous church in England, opened its doors for the first time.

Today is the birthday of tightrope walker Charles Blondin who was born in 1824 and is renowned for crossing the Niagara Gorge on a tightrope.

It's also the birthday of John Tenniel, who was the illustrator of various books such as 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland'. Born in 1820 he once said ""A designer knows he has achieved perfection not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away."
