UPDATE: 4pm

An NZTA spokesperson has said that the Karangahake Gorge is not currently closed.

"SH2 isn't closing yet - there is surface flooding but contractors are on site and there will be restrictions in place (stop/go controls) to keep people safe.

"We're asking people to slow down, take extra care, and comply with any temporary traffic control measures that are in place."

Karangahake Gorge Road on State Highway 2 appears to be flooding.

Images are being posted on Facebook of the Karangahake Gorge beginning to flood.

The river appears to have risen to road level in places, and motorists should be careful of the surface flooding if driving through the gorge.

A police spokesperson says they do not believe the road is closed, and that motorists should ensure they drive to the conditions.

"Go slow, and obey the directions of any signage/officers."

SunLive has contacted NZTA for further information.
