Police believe a man murdered in Gate Pa in February was a case of mistaken identity, and are now appealing to the public for information.

Following extensive enquiries, police can now say they believe 52-year-old David Rawiri Kuka was not the intended victim.

David died of serious head injuries at a Wilrose Place address in Gate Pa on February 11, at the same address where Lance Waite was injured on January 3, before dying in hospital later that day.

'We know that [Mr Kuka] mainly kept to himself, working at a shop on occasion and carving items for family and friends,” says Detective Inspector Lew Warner.

'Sadly Mr Kuka was shot execution style and we believe this was premediated and cowardly. I believe the community can help us get answers for Mr Kuka's family.

'Someone will know something and can help us bring his family some sense of closure.”

Police are now interested in a silver vehicle seen near the scene at the relevant time, says Lew.

'The investigation team would like to speak to anyone who recognises the vehicle.”

People with information can ring Tauranga Police on 07 577 4300 or call Crimestoppers anonymously via 0800 555 111.
