Bay under 12s stand tall in futsal nationals

Bay of Plenty’s champion under 12 futsal team.

Bay of Plenty's future as a power in the indoor version of the beautiful game looks assured with its youngest representative boys team coming home from the National Youth Futsal Championships with the title.

The Bay's under 12 team - Braetyn Allan, Phillip Azevedo, Kody Feek, Dylan Hansen, Connor Hearn, Benjamin Hulbert, Felix Loveridge, Joby Reid, and Aidan Pratt – won all their matches through the tournament before slipping up in their last encounter when the title was already in the bag.

Highlight of the event for the boys was beating old rivals Waikato in their second match. One goal down with just minutes remaining, Dylan equalised for the Bay before Benjamin, one of the team's youngest members, subbed on and almost immediately earned big kudos with the winning goal.

It proved to be their toughest challenge in the tournament as the Waikato team finished second, two points behind the Bay boys on 15.

All members of the team contributed to the total of 29 goals they scored in their six matches, while conceding just nine. Kody was top scorer with seven goals, followed by Benjamin with four.

Parent Glen Hulbert he was hugely impressed with the whole team, but the top individual for him was their young goalkeeper Felix.

'He's just ten years old, and he is incredible,” says Glen. 'They all were, but he was just outstanding throughout the whole weekend.”

Other teams competing were Capital, Canterbury United, Central, Nelson Bays, and a Capital Futsal Development side, in a round robin format.

Capital Futsal were the only team to get the better of the champion Bay side, taking out their encounter 3-1 in the last match of the tournament.

The team in action in Palmerston North.
