Cairo George achieves second round KO victory

Cairo George in action.

Cairo George (16-1-0, 9KOs) put on a showcase performance this past Saturday night at the exclusive Marina Bay Sands Hotel in Singapore.

The 28-year-old was too fast, too quick and too skilful for his Indonesian opponent Gusti Elnino (4-13-1, 1KO) as he claimed a second-round KO victory.

George was set to face Robert Kopa Palue (14-7-3 4KOs) also from Indonesia, but Palue pulled out of the bout at the last minute.

This last-minute complication meant the promoters were forced to locate a short notice alternative opponent for New Zealand's No.1 ranked super lightweight.

Thankfully for George, Elnino agreed to take on the 'Waikato Warrior”, who would have been disappointed to have made the trip over to Singapore and not been given a chance to step into the ring.

A bout with Palue, whom George considered a gatekeeper to the upper tier super lightweight fighters in the Asia Pacific region, would have provided a better gauge of George's abilities than Elnino.

However, rather than dwell on what could have been, George used his opportunity of fighting on a major platform, to put on a boxing display that would have earned him more than a few new fans.

From the moment the first round bell rung a relaxed George went about his business with controlled aggression, peppering Elnino with punches that came from multiple angles and delivered from both orthodox and southpaw stance.

The Indonesian did his best to stay in the bout but by the midway point of the first round it seemed to be only a matter of when and not if George would end the fight.

The start of the second round saw the continuation of George's dominance, and he soon began upping the tempo of his attacking output.

George repeatedly landed heavy body shots on Elnino, and they soon started to take their toll on the Indonesian.

After one particularly punishing left hook to the body, Elnino momentarily shut down, and George seeing his chance to finish the fight pounced, poured on the pressure and forced the referee to step in and call a halt to the contest.

George will now take a well-earned vacation before returning to his hometown of Hamilton. At the moment there are no publicly confirmed bouts for George, but his contract with Ringstar Promotions ensures that he will be fighting multiple times a year.

So, whether he returns to the ring in 2018 or 2019, it should not be too long before fans get another chance see one of New Zealand's top pound for pound fighters back inside the ring.

George was not the only Kiwi in action in Singapore on Saturday. Dunedin's Chase Hayley (6-3-1, 2 KOs) scored a unanimous decision win over Indonesian Ramadhan Weriuw (17-11-1, 15KOs) in their super middleweight clash earlier in the night.
