The owners of Tauranga based furniture import company Peak Imports, Tania and Derrin Greenslade, are rueing their loses with over $100,000 in stock stuck onboard Rena.
They have five containers of imported furniture on the ship, which has been stranded on the Astrolabe Reef since October 5.
Peak Imports owner Tania Greenslade is facing a hefty bill for the containers of furniture the business has on the Rena.
Tania says they do not have maritime insurance and will not be covered.
'Our business insurance does not cover for the cargo itself, and it will not cover an 80 per cent payment for the cargo. It wouldn't cover that. It is a big hit.”
As part of this process, Svitzer spokesperson Matthew Watson says the company has placed a percentage cap on the goods, something Tania is not well informed about.
'As far as I know they were not able to call for a general average. I have never heard of anything like this before.
'The shipping companies have not notified us, there has been very little communication.”
Tania has received little information in regards to her cargo on Rena.
She received the first piece of correspondence about its status last week, since first finding out the containers were onboard the vessel.
'We only just received notification that our five containers are below deck.
'This is the only correspondence we have had from the shipping company.
'The probability is that we will not be able to salvage our cargo.”
Tania says the whole situation is disastrous.
'These shipping companies are a law unto themselves.
'They are regulated internationally and seem to make up their own rules as they go.”
All of the Greenslades cargo has been sold, so not only will they loose the value of the furniture, plus the cost of shipping, they will also loose the profit on the sale of furniture.
Tania says 2011 has not been a good year, with her company losing a warehouse and two major customers in the Christchurch earthquake and a flood that wiped out 60 per cent of the company's stock.
Tania says they can apply for loss of business insurance and business interruption insurance.
Svitzer is advising people with cargo on Rena to contact their insurance companies.

Cargo Averaging

Cargo averaging has been part of marine law since the Romans used it as a way of valuing wine amphora transported on the Mediterranean Sea. So it is not something just made up by the shipping company!!
Hard to believe

Almost unbelievable given how inexpensive marine insurance is that an import business would not insure it. Clearly, this is not a general average as there is no deliberate sacrifice to save the voyage (amongst other things) but surely a knowledgeable business person would insure just to protect against general average alone, if nothing else.

Sounds like poor business management to be honest.
