People rally behind Wally Haumaha

The daughter of beleaguered deputy police commissioner Wally Haumaha has come to his defence in a feisty Rotorua exchange on Facebook.

Tayla Haumaha urged commenters to 'keep finding whatever made them happy” to make judgements against her father.

Following the release of an Independent Police Conduct Authority report, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern retained Haumaha as the deputy police commissioner, a decision in which has resulted in a welter of comment on Thursday.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority found that Haumaha had 'humiliated and intimidated” two women staffers by a commission of inquiry.

He has since been reported to having said he was 'bewildered” at the complaints.

Rotorua-raised Haumaha had been accused of bullying by four women.

Jacinda says the evidence was not sufficient to consider removing him from his post. She described Haumaha's actions as 'clearly inappropriate”.

'We as a family have endured this ugly smear for six months. Dad has had nothing but a clean record of appraisals,” says Tayla in a post on Facebook.

'These four women to be exact only decided to speak up now once he has made his way to 2IC of the NZ Police.

'These inquiries have had top QCs, lawyers and solicitors investigating it. And the findings have come out.

'You have heard one side of the story. But hopefully you have watched TV1 news. It will not affect his appointment. Merry Christmas.”

Senior Rotorua district councillor Charles Sturt says he's 'of a mind” to start a petition to the Speaker Trevor Mallard, requesting National Party Police spokesperson Chris Bishop's resignation over his 'parliamentary abuse for using an informant inside the police to discredit and demean Wallace, his wife, his career, and his family”.

Sturt says he's incensed that Haumaha could not respond as natural justice was denied him.

'Chris was relentless and an eminently high-status QC has exonerated the process.”

Charles uploaded a Radio NZ story on Facebook on Thursday, drawing ‘likes' from Trevor Maxwell, fellow long-term district councillor and a former deputy mayor of Rotorua, and national tourism kaumatua.

Former Rotorua district councillor Geoff Kenny also shared Charles and Trevor's view.

One commenter Heemi McGarvey says he thinks the issue goes higher than the National Party Police spokesperson.

'I think he was just a puppet for someone in a higher position.

'The thought of having a Maori in such a high government position will scare a few people,” says Heemi.

Another commenter, Dal Smith, says a line needed to be drawn on how long Louise Nicholas, a critic of Haumaha since the controversy of his appointment erupted, could 'keep doing this to people honestly – how long is [it] going to keep happening[?]”

Hinerangi Goodman agreed. 'Wally has proven time and again through his work and commitment to his people how dedicated he has been towards helping to improve the rates of so-called offending among Maori…Louise Nicholas needs to get a life.”

Sunny Wikiriwhi urged Charles Sturt to take action.

He, too, took a swipe at Louise Nicholas's well publicised views of the complaint against Haumaha.

'What is upsetting is that the Police reached out to you, Louise, gave you a job as police advisor for new recruits. Wally was never involved in any of the allegations that happened to you.” He accused Nicholas of bringing Haumaha's mana into disrepute.

Geoff Kenny said, 'Wally is a good bloke, a good cop and a good representative for Maori.”

Vincent Whitewood urged Sturt to shelve his bias. 'If this were anyone else in Wally's position don't you think it would be unconscionable for that person to remain in the role?” He said the Prime Minister had signed off on the appointment. Whatever happened there would be losers.

Come on toughen up you complainants. In a disciplined organisation like the Police, military, fire service etc staff need to be given directions and then get on with it. If you dont like it - tough. Wally is a tough, competent uncompromising professional and Id sooner have him in charge of a traumatic event than these winging plonkers. GO WALLY
