Salvors to asses damage on Rena

Salvors working on the Rena are hoping to be able to get a better idea of what further damage has been done to the ship following the region's latest poor weather conditions.

Four to five metre swells had been battering the Rena, which ran aground on Astrolabe Reef on October 5, and a crack in the ships hull had widened to two metres over the weekend.

Salvors hope to get a better picture of the damage the Rena has sustained over the weekend.

Svitzer Salvage spokesperson Brian Dale believes the ship is still intact, but they won't know the full extent of the damage until they get out there – something they are hoping to do today.

He says the damage will have to be verified by divers when the sea eases a little bit.

Brian hopes the weather continues to improve in the next few days to allow the container removing operation to resume.

Even further charges possile

These salvors must have balls of steel. I hope the two Philipino's get the book well and truly thrown at them. What happens if God forbid someone gets killed? It'll be a long time before these men see home. And as for Mediterainian Shipping passing the buck to the crew, their cost cutting and profiteering directly led to this catastrophe and I sincerely hope they are brought before the courts as well.

Reality

Come on that is not true. If you send a parcel by courier and he has an accident is it partly your fault that you used him to transport your parcel????

They employed the crew.

As they say, "pay peanuts get monkeys." In this country if one of your employees has an accident the company can be responsible for failing to take all practicable steps to ensure the safety of that employee. These people get around maritime laws by hiring ships from flag of convenience countries so they can cut costs and they don't have to pay the crews as much. It's called nickel and dimeing.

Well Done to Salvors

The Salvors need to be congratulated on all the work they have done to prevent further destruction and pollution to our area. I hope the weather calms enough for them to get further containers off. IanS when you sign a parcel over to a courier you have paid for him/her to transport your parcel safely to its destination. If they loose it it they have insurance to pay for replacement if you as the sender have done everything right according to their rules. In the case of the Rena I suspect all those who have belonging in the containers have done the right thing and therefore need to be compensated. Salvors keep up the great work.
