Weather stalls Rena salvage

Winds gusting at about 25 knots at the Astrolabe Reef and rough sea conditions mean salvage operations on the Rena are suspended for another day.

Winds are forecast to reach up to 35 knots today with maximum wave heights of up to 5m making conditions too dangerous for divers.

The Rena's stern section photographed this morning by Maritime New Zealand.

The barge Sea Tow 60 is sheltering in the lee of Mayor Island.

The Crane Barge Smit Borneo is in port.

Maritime New Zealand reports its early morning observation flight confirmed no significant change to the state of the two parts of the container ship wreck.

A light sheen of oil is continuing to come from the wreck.

MNZ shoreline clean-up assessment teams are working from Pukehina to Matata from first light today.

As at 7am, they have not sighted any fresh oil wash ashore from overnight and just one packet of milk powder has been found at Matata.

MNZ says oil spill response teams and container recovery teams are ready to respond to any reports of fresh oil or debris coming ashore.

Container recovery and oil spill response work will continue today and wildlife teams will be out checking for any affected wildlife.

Community meetings will be held at the Maketu Fire Station at 2pm and Pukehina Beach Community Centre at 4pm.

Where is the ships owner? If I were to have an 'incident' on land or sea I would be made to front up (even if I weren't in control). They obviously don't care. If this fiasco was happening off a Greek Island it would certainly be a different matter.
