Help needed to clean beach

Fresh oil along Papamoa east is seeing Adopt a Beach volunteers mobilising to clean the area.

Martime New Zealand reported fresh oil covering a 2km stretch of the beach had been found by onshore assessment clean-up crews on Saturday.

Brenda Collard with a handful of oil.

Papamoa East resident and Adopt a Beach member Brenda Collard is collecting oil off the beach and says small spots can be seen, with some up to 2cm in length.

Some pieces are larger and matted together with plant material.

'There is quite a bit of oil and we need more people to help, I would have thought more people would have come down to help.”

Compensation?

I think most of the locals' compensation is being able to walk around on a stunningly clean beach.

With the adopt a beach, the leaders have oil rubbish bins that get picked up so that the oil is disposed of properly, rather than normal council bins. They also have gloves, bags and lots of other things to help with picking up oil.

Vodafone was really nice and took $50 off the bills of those who were registered and had vodafone accounts. We welcome anyone else who wants to donate!

Oil Dangers

I have heard (second hand) of several oil clean up volunteers getting very sick from the oil - does anyone know if this is true?
