New Zealand's largest rural art collection that tells stories of provincial communities has had the collection grow by a giant new painting.

Over the past two years Farmlands has been transforming some of its key properties around the country into living works of art, and Saturday saw the completion of the ninth instalment of the Farmlands HeART of the Community project in Tauranga.

Renowned New Zealand artist Erika Pearce completed the exquisite artwork, in true style.

Tauranga Mayor Greg Brownless says it's wonderful that Farmlands has chosen Tauranga for its next heart of the Community project.

'I'm looking forward to seeing how Erika reflects Tauranga's long history of agriculture and horticulture in her mural.

Celebrating the true heart of rural New Zealand, the mural incorporates rich history from the Tauranga region and flourishes in its horticultural surroundings.

The 23 metre long public artwork is set to become a well-known attraction in the Tauranga area.

The mural has been painted on the side of Tauranga's Farmlands store, on Taurikura Drive off State Highway 36.
