Williams Cup final replay

A replay of last season's Williams Cup final should provide one of the highlights of the third round of the 2012 Baywide championship today.

Last year, Mount Maunganui and Tauranga Boys' College squared off in the final of the time honoured Bay of Plenty club cricket championship.

In a game that was on the line throughout most of the contest, Mount Maunganui posted 232/8 then bowled out Tauranga Boys' for 196 to take out the Baywide title.

Both teams were in good form in the pre-holiday break BOP Cup, with Platinum Pacific Reclad Mount Maunganui finishing second and Tauranga Boys' rounding out the top four.

This weekend's clash at Blake Park should see another battle of attrition, with both sides possessing plenty of outstanding talent.

Mount opening batsmen Peter Drysdale topped the BOP Cup batting aggregate with 329 runs, which included a highest total of 140 not out.

Tauranga Boys' bowler Tom Clout finished in a prominent position on the bowling statistics, with his best figures of six wickets for just 24 runs.

BOP Cup champions Element IMF Cadets are on the road, playing East Bay United in Whakatane.

Last weekend they laid down the gauntlet to the other contenders – smashing over 400 runs against Central, then bowling the Rotorua side out for less than 50 runs.

The sole Eastern Bay representative team in Baywide club cricket showed what they are capable of when they upset Mount Maunganui two weeks ago.

The Eastern Bay team humbled the defending champions, bowling them out for 67, at Mount Maunganui headquarters at Blake Park.

Joint leaders Eves Realty Greerton, will be looking to consolidate their position at the top (equal with Cadets) of the points ladder, when they meet Te Puke at Pemberton Park.

Solid victories over Central and East Bay United suggest that they are genuine contenders this season.

While Te Puke has had an up and down season they have the firepower to give the competition leaders a real shake.

A local Rotorua derby will take centre stage at Smallbone Park when iTCo Central and BOP Indians square off.

The encounter will move one of the Rotorua sides off the bottom of the standings, which should provide plenty of motivation for both teams.
