Greerton faces TBC challenge

There will be plenty in interest in the Williams Cup encounter today Saturday, at Nicholson field, where Tauranga Boys' College is at home to Eves Realty Greerton.

Greerton is sitting in an unfamiliar position at the top of the Williams Cup standings.

The Pemberton Park based side share the top of the table position with Baywide heavyweight Element IMF Cadets.

In recent years inconsistency has blighted the Greerton record, however, the current season has brought a new tenacity to the premier side.

The move to Greerton by several Tauranga Boys' College first XI players, and the inclusion of three Dutch Academy players this season, has strengthened the team's resolve.

Last weekend's game highlighted the impact that the new recruits are having.

Dutchman James Gruiters top scored, with former Tauranga Boys' players Shane Wineti and Brett Hampton also getting amongst the runs.

Tauranga Boys', which have been a model of consistency for most of the season, ran up the white flag of defeat against Platinum Pacific Reclad Mount Maunganui last weekend, being bowled out for 75.

However, with the return of several key team members this week, they could give the visitors a run to the wire.

Joint equal leader Cadets will face arch-rivals Te Puke at the Tauranga Domain.

The Cadets batsmen are on fire at the moment, smashing over 400 runs against iTCo Central two weeks ago.

Long-time club member Matthew Drake, who will play his 50th game for the Bay of Plenty rep team on Sunday, blasted a big century in the Central game.

Te Puke, which has posted the most Williams Cup titles in the 80 years of competition, always play with pride and passion against their long-time rivals.

One of the form bowlers of the Williams Cup has been Dutch Academy player Paul van Meekeren who took a four-wicket bag two weeks ago.

Rotorua Central, which put their first points on the board last week, are sure to want to continue their momentum, when they face East Bay United at Boord Park.

The Eastern Bay side showed its capabilities, rolling Mount Maunganui in the opening round of the Williams Cup.

BOP Indians continue to make improvement in their individual performances, however, their big test will come at Smallbone Park, where they will meet defending champions Mount Maunganui.

The current titleholders are lurking just off the pace, in third place on the points tally board.
