Kehu comes in first

Mount Maunganui surfers Kehu Butler and Elin Tawharu are the under-12 division winners at the Billabong Grom Series event held at Whangamata at the weekend.

Kehu has now claimed two titles in the Billabong Grom Series while Elin betters her runner-up placing from the first event.

Kehu Butler won the Billabong Grom Series event held at Whangamata at the weekend.

In the open division of the Billabong Pro presented by Sony, run in conjunction with the Grommet event, it was Gisborne surfer Bobby Hansen who stood upon the winner's dais.

After 24 months of battling injuries, Bobby is back to full fitness and his surfing was sublime throughout the entire event.
In deteriorating 1.0m stormy conditions, he posted 16.10 out of a possible 20 points to defeat Raglan's Larry Fisher.

Bobby now leads the New Zealand Pro Series with two events remaining.
'I was thinking just before the final that it had been a while since I have won a national event, even made a final for that matter,” says Bobby.
It was in fact at Whangamata where Bobby claimed his last win – back in 2009.

He now heads into the next event at Gisborne with hometown advantage and the hope of securing back-to-back wins.
In Whangamata he used his powerful backhand to notch up a 9.25 point ride for three huge powerful turns.

He then extended his lead with a 6.85 point ride to put the pressure on his opponents.

Bobby also won the Sony Performance of the Event Award for his surfing in the earlier rounds.
Placing runner-up was Larry Fisher, who was in the best form of his career.
He scored 14.37 in the final after starting out with a 7.8 point ride for two huge forehand hacks.

Larry, however, finished the final still requiring an 8.44 point ride to catch up to Bobby.
'I thought he was ripping the whole event, I have never seen him surf that good before so I am stoked for him actually,” says Bobby.
Placing third in the final was Whangamata's Matt Scorringe scoring 10.03 as the highest placed local surfer in the open men's division.

Taranaki surfer Keone Campbell placed fourth in the final.
Earlier in the day Larry and Keone defeated Leon Santorik and Blair Stewart in the first semifinal and Bobby and Matt eliminated Mount Maugnanui's Tim O'Connor and Whangamata's Dune Kennings in the second semifinal.
All the elements finally came together for Whangamata surfer Ella Williams to win the Billabong open women's division.

Ella has been knocking on the door of a victory for over 12 months placing in finals and winning age group events, but at the weekend she won.
'This is my first win in the open women's division and it couldn't have been better than to do it in my hometown with all the support of my family and friends, I am just so happy,” she said.
Ella and runner-up Jessica Santorik from Raglan opted to surf on the lefthanders and exchanged blows throughout the final with Ella getting the upper hand scoring 13.17 to Jessica's 10.43.

Ella placed third at the national championships last month and goes into the next event in two weeks' time as the ratings leader on the New Zealand Pro Series.
Placing third in the final was Jayda Martin-Fitzharris from Gisborne with a score of 9.77 while national champion Thandi Durham placed fourth.
In the under-20 division, Sean Kettle from Taranki claimed the biggest win of his career.

Sean went wave for wave with Tane Wallis from Piha – the battle going right down to the final hooter when both surfers were up and riding.

Tane completed a big air reverse to get the score he required for the win, but it was Sean on a wave behind him then carved a wave to the beach to edge back in front scoring an 8.0 point ride for a 15.27 point heat total.
This is the first year out of the under-16 boys' division for Sean and he looked every bit a force in the under-20 men's division.
Tane had to settle for second after the last exchange with Dune Kennings scoring 12.63 in third and unable to match the flare of Sean.

Gisborne's Adam Grimson placed fourth in the final.
In the Billabong Grom Series presented by Oceanbridge Elliot Paerata - Reid from Piha snatched victory in the under-16 boys' division with an air reverse for a 6.13 point wave score to jump from third to first leaving no time on the clock for his opponents to fight back.

Finishing with a 12.3 point heat total he defeated Dune Kennings for the second event in a row and now holds a big lead going into the final event of the series at Piha in March.
Dune had only just moved into the lead in the final after Jordan Griffin from Mount Maunganui held pole position for much of the heat.

Dune finished with a 12.27 point heat total ahead of Jordan in third and Te Rapai Barbarich-Love from Taranaki in fourth place.
After placing runner up at the first event held at Mount Maunganui one week ago, Jasmine Smith from Gisborne went one better this weekend winning the under-16 girls' division.

Jasmine left her opponents requiring a combination of scores to catch her 14.50 point heat total which comprised of a 7.5 and 7.0 point rides.

The Sansom twins claimed second and third places with Gabriela getting the nod over Bianca this time around.

Gisborne's Dayna Story placed fourth in the final for the second consecutive weekend.
Sean Kettle's younger brother Isaac claimed his first victory in the under-14 boys' division scoring a 6.43 on his last wave to pip Kehu Butler.

The performance was enough to give him the Sony Breakthrough Performance Award.

Kehu had led the heat for much of the 20 minutes, but ended up in second place ahead of Manu Scott - Arrieta from Sandy Bay) in third and Joshua Farr from Taranaki in fourth.
Abby Falwasser-Logan took another girls' title back to Gisborne winning the under-14 girls' division.
