T20 champion to emerge

The equation for Tauranga Boys' College and Element IMF Cadets in the last round of the Lonestar Tauranga and Rotorua Twenty20 competition is simple – win and they are both through to the title decider in mid-afternoon on Saturday.

However, if Tauranga Boys' or Cadets taste defeat, the inaugural Baywide T20 title is split wide open with Platinum Pacific Reclad and iTCo Central entering the equation, with who had beaten who deciding the two teams to go through to the afternoon's grand final.

Last weekend, Tauranga Boys' went to the top of the points standings when they sneaked past Central then defeated Te Puke.

On Saturday, they must defeat East Bay United to guarantee a place in the final stanza.

Standing in their way is East Bay's Alex Yates who surged past 500 runs for the season against Cadets last weekend.

There will be bragging rights at stake along with a final's berth, when Western Bay archrivals Cadets and Mount Maunganui square off on Fergusson Park number one.

There are few games in Baywide cricket that create the intensity of the regular meetings between the two clubs.

Both have significant pieces of silverware in their trophy cabinets, to testify to their prowess on the field of play.

Mount Maunganui is the defending Baywide champion of champion titleholders while Cadets recently won the ND club championship.

Rotorua Central, which has shown good form in the T20 competition after a disappointing Baywide regular season, should prove too strong for BOP Indians.

A Central win and Tauranga Boys' or Cadets tasting defeat will bring the calculators into play to decide the two finalists.

Eves Realty Greerton will want to make up for the disappointments of last weekend, where after looking genuine contenders, they dropped both T20 matches.

However, Te Puke, which has also posted three wins in the all action competition, will be equally as hungry for victory.
