With the majority of cinemas remaining closed around the country Tauranga locals are able to spend Saturday night at the movies.

Ensure your radio is working, grab a ticket and head to Classic Flyers in Mount Maunganui for drive in movies on Saturday, June 6.

The ASB presents Night Flicks Drive in Cinema tour is a collaboration with Matt O'Meeghan of Night Flicks and Jaymz Mackenzie-Hooper from Vivid Collection.

The pair partnered with ASB and KidsCan so are using the events to raise awareness and funds for the charity that works with Kiwi kids living in poverty.

Jaymz's business does DJ equipment and large event production hire and Matt does outdoor cinemas and when lockdown started all their events were cancelled.

'We had no work at all. So we sat down and thought, what can we do to try to have some work coming in,” says Jaymz

They saw overseas that drive in movies were coming back and had everything they needed to make it happen here.

'The whole idea was to make it as safe as possible, by everyone being in your vehicle bubbles, and being in your own cars, not being around anyone else. So it was a safe and enjoyable thing to do.”

They also got special clearance to hold the tour because there will be more than 100 people at the events but they've limited it to 150 cars so people can remain spaced out.

People are able to order food from Classic Flyers contactlessly through an app and cars are separated into zones so there are around 75 people in each area with different toilet facilities for each zone.

Tauranga local Jaymz recommends three to four people per car for the most comfortable viewing and best view of the 36m2 screen.

People are able to tune into the sound through a FM radio.

There are two movies sessions on Saturday with ‘Jumanji Welcome to the Jungle' playing at 5.30pm and ‘Hairspray' at 8.45pm.

Tauranga is the first stop on the tour - it's heading to seven other North Island locations and four in the South Island.

More information about the drive in cinema can be found on the Facebook page.
