Tauranga City Council has introduced a temporary 12-month restriction to their dog bylaw to help protect local wildlife.

From August 1, 2020, to January 31, 2021, dogs will not be allowed in the area known as Shark Alley (from Moturiki [Leisure Island] to the rocky outcrop heading towards Papamoa).

From February 1, 2021, to July 31, 2021, dogs can be walked in this area if they are on leash, as this is outside the nesting and breeding season.

Brent Lincoln, Team Leader Animal Services says this is a positive change and will provide further protection for the wildlife in the area.

"The change is necessary to help protect endangered species which are breeding, raising young or recuperating along this stretch of the beach."

Council has been reviewing the impact dogs have on wildlife in some ecologically sensitive areas for some time, in particular to the success of the bird breeding cycle.

Council will be placing signage in the area to highlight the changes to the public.

"We are asking all dog owners to please take responsibility for their animals and to help us protect our wildlife. It is everyone's responsibility to ensure that their dog is under control at all times."

Under the current bylaw, dogs are permanently banned from Mount Maunganui Main Beach, Moturiki [Leisure Island], Mauao and Pilot Bay. This includes footpaths, boardwalks, grassed areas and dunes.
