Firefighters have returned to Matakana Island today after a fire broke out on Matakana Island on Sunday.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand Northern Fire Communications shift manager Carren Larking says fire crews are working to make sure there are no flare-ups and to dampen down hot spots.
"A tanker is on the island and there is a couple of rural crews."
She says no fire crews were present on Matakana Island.
Helicopters with monsoon buckets were deployed to Matakana Island on Sunday to help put out the fire that took hold on the ocean side of the island.
The fire was first noticed around 3pm by the skipper of the Kewpie, Amy Neale. She phoned 111 as smoke plumes started to billow higher.
Three Helicopters with monsoon buckets were seen near the island yesterday as the fire continued to burn.
