Charges laid over drowning at Waihi Beach

Jaden Chhayrann was reported missing on February 21.

WorkSafe has filed charges over the drowning of a Melville High School student at Waihi Beach last year.

However, the organisation won't say whether it is the school or any individual teacher or teachers who have been charged in relation to the death of 17-year-old Jaden Chhayrann.

A Worksafe spokesperson says charges have been filed at the Hamilton District Court, and a hearing had been scheduled for April 28.

'Any party charged under the Health and Safety at Work Act has the right to apply for name suppression at the first court hearing. We are therefore unable to identify the charges as providing that information may lead to the identification of the charged party or parties.”

Chhayrann was on a class field trip to Waihī Beach at the base of the eastern Coromandel on February 21, when he was caught in a rip while swimming and pulled out to sea.

His body was located 10 days later near Whiritoa Beach, about 16 kilometres north of Waihi.

Melville High School principal Clive Hamill was not able to respond to enquiries.

Charge the Government for Road Deaths

Seems like Worksafe are out to charge anyone and everyone. First White Island, now this. I think it's time they sued the Government, and NZTA for an unsafe road between Tauranga and Katikati, which has resulted in many deaths. Come on, grow some real balls and deal with real issues. What a screwed up country.
