Tree removal and maintenance works are taking place on State Highway 2 today.

The removal work on Sunday between Omokoroa Rd and Esdaile Rd is to remove dead trees posing a safety risk and will be undertaken between 6am and 1pm, says a statement from Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency.

The works are planned for the weekend to minimise the impacts on traffic, however, delays are expected, says NZTA.

Northbound traffic can bypass the tree felling work via Youngson Road, Old Highway and Esdaile Road. This route is not suitable for heavy vehicles.

There is no alternative route available for southbound traffic.

Stop/Go traffic management will be in place with a 30km/h temporary speed limit. Contractors will be actively working to minimise delays as much as possible, says NZTA.

Tree maintenance work on Tuesday 15 to Thursday 17 June will be north of the SH2 Sharp Road intersection.

The works are on an existing shelterbelt will be undertaken between 8.30am and 3.30pm each day.

Lane shifts will be in place with a 50km/h temporary speed limit. For safety reasons, short duration road closures will be required at several points throughout the work.

'Please take extra care, reduce your speed and follow directions of traffic management staff and signage,” says a Waka Kotahi statement.

'In the event of bad weather or other unforeseen circumstances, work may be postponed.”
