UPDATED: The person with Covid-19 that escaped from a managed quarantine facility in Auckland has been arrested.
The man was located at an Ōtāhuhu address after escaping an Ellerslie quarantine facility earlier today.
Police in full PPE have taken him into custody, says a police spokesperson.
The man has been charged under the Health Order with failing to comply with order (Covid-19) and he has appeared in the Auckland District Court via a contactless video link this afternoon.
A judge has bailed him to return to a managed quarantine facility.
The man's family have been extremely cooperative with police and police thank them for this, says the spokesperson
EARLIER: A person who tested positive for Covid-19 has escaped a managed quarantine facility in Ellerslie.
Police have cordoned off an Ōtāhuhu address and are preparing to arrest the individual, says Superintendent Steve Kehoe.
Police were notified about the escapee shortly after 10.30am today.
Police are liaising with the Ministry of Health on this matter to understand this person's movements since he left the MIQ facility and being located in Ōtāhuhu, says Kehoe.
'Police staff responding to this incident are dressed in full PPE,” he says.
'All police staff who have responded to this incident have been following all health guidelines, in accordance with police Covid-19 procedures.
'Police are working closely with our partners on where this individual will be taken and we can assure our community every precaution is being taken.”

I hope the hell this moron goes to prison. He is putting the community at risk and putting the Police at risk. What a complete prat!! Of course, soft old NZ will slap his wrist and tell him not to do anything like that again. GET TOUGH!!

We have a thousand cases in two weeks from one person. With a highly infectious virus you only need one lapse. I suspect this individual will not be alone in his response. Which is why lockdowns don’t work. Or throwing the book at him several times. There are many others who would do the same.
