Live Covid updates: Four Middlemore wards closed

Four Middlemore Hospital wards are closed to new patients and 29 staff are in isolation after a man admitted on Saturday tested positive for Covid-19.

The man showed up at Middlemore's emergency department with abdominal pains and denied having knowledge of being in contact with the virus or being in a location of interest, and did not have any other symptoms.

He was tested on Sunday morning, but left in the ward with three other patients because there was no isolation room available. A positive test came back later in the afternoon and he was moved to a dedicated Covid-19 ward.

The staff, including 11 doctors and 13 nurses, are in isolation for two weeks and all patients on four wards are being treated as if they have the virus.

Meanwhile, regions outside Auckland have moved to level 2 and must follow the new rules on mask wearing and numbers allowed in venues that come with it.

On the same day the MoH is telling us that even in Level 2 (sorry, Delta 2) all public facing staff must wear masks at all times, we have 29 staff wandering about a hospital, in Level 4, where you might actually come into contact with someone with the bug, unmasked. No “single server”, no masks, no idea.
