The Thames-Coromandel District Council is appealing for witnesses after a century-old cenotaph was badly damaged.

The council says the monument at Victoria Park in Thames appeared to have been deliberately vandalised. Its upper section has been knocked over and smashed.

The cenotaph was erected to honour soldiers from the Coromandel who served in the Boer War in South Africa and the council said police had been notified about the vandalism.

A post on the council's Facebook page says the broken sections are being stored safely while the damage is assessed to see whether it can be repaired.

The post asked anyone with knowledge of what had happened to contact the council's customer services team on 07 868 0200.

...but surely you'd have to be drunk or stoned, or otherwise beside yourself, to do this. What person, in their right mind could be so devoid of any shred of decency, respect, or gratitude for Kiwis who paid a price that most of us can't even imagine paying. My advice to the offender would be to turn yourself in. Your life is going nowhere, and you need help.
