The Ministry of Health is due to provide an update of its Covid data about 1pm on Sunday.

No overall update was provided on Saturday, but the ministry did advise that two new cases of the disease were confirmed in Wellington.

The two cases were linked to recent travel to the Bay of Plenty and several locations of interest in Wellington. There was a possible link by one case to a drum & bass festival on January 3 in Tauranga.

A pop-up Covid testing site was also set up in the Coromandel Peninsula seaside town of Whangamatā during the weekend, after traces of the virus were detected in the town's wastewater.

Health officials had not been able to link the wastewater detection to a confirmed or recovered case, Waikato DHB said on Friday.

The ministry advised of a range of new Covid places of interest on Sunday morning. They included one place classed as a close contact location – the Village Sports Bar & Cafe in Ngongotaha, Rotorua, from 6.30pm to 10.30pm on January 1. People at the venue at the time are required to self-isolate and have an immediate Covid test.

Many of the other locations of interest advised on Sunday morning were in the Bay of Plenty, many of them Mt Maunganui. Bendon Westgate in Auckland also featured several times.

In its full update on Friday, the ministry said there were 35 new Covid cases in the community, and 24 at the border.

Of the new community cases on Friday, 18 were in Auckland, 13 in Bay of Plenty, one in Waikato and three in the Lakes DHB area.

Friday's cases took the total number of community cases in the current outbreak to 11,057.
