The organisers of the One Love Festival have announced that the festival cannot go ahead as planned on the weekend of January 29 due to Omicron.

New Zealand will move to the Red setting of the Covid-19 Protection Framework at 11.59pm tonight, Sunday January 23. This is due to community transmission of the Omicron variant of Covid-19 in Auckland and Nelson/Marlborough.

The One Love Festival announcement was made on Sunday afternoon on the festival's Facebook page following the 11am announcement by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern that NZ will be shifting to the red setting in the traffic light system at midnight.

"Aotearoa is moving into Red under the traffic light system - unfortunately for us, this means that One Love Festival cannot operate as planned on the 29 - 30 January," write the organisers on their Facebook page.

The prime minister and director-general of health held an unsheduled news conference on Sunday morning about the Omicron variant.

The variant has been found in both the North Island and South Island, prompting an urgent shift into the red traffic light setting at midnight tonight.

Gatherings can go ahead at Red, with and without My Vaccine Pass requirements, but with different restrictions for each.

With My Vaccine Pass, at gatherings there can be up to 100 people based on 1-metre physical distancing in a single defined space at the venue at any time.

Without My Vaccine Pass at gatherings there can be up to 25 people based on 1-metre physical distancing in a single defined space at the venue at any time.

"We will have further announcements for you on Wednesday - in the meantime, please be patient and please be kind," says a One Love Festival organiser.

The festival organisers also direct anyone with questions to the FAQs page of their website at https://www.onelovefestival.co.nz/faq

Although many will be disappointed, it is a sensible decision. I have to admit to some relief as the noise has been bad in the past... Nevertheless, proper efforts have been made to make the noise reasonable and last year was not bad at all. I'm sorry for the fans; maybe it can be postponed to another date?
