CityFitness Fraser Cove is working closely with the Ministry of Health to properly confirm when a potentially Covid positive case visited the facility.

The Tauranga gym has been named as a Covid-19 Location of Interest on the Ministry of Health website for Monday, January 24 and Tuesday, January 25.

A spokesperson for the facility says initial reports on the time visited have changed.

'We're liaising the Ministry of Health to confirm when, and what areas within the facility the positive case went in order to properly identify and properly classify contacts.

'Naming our Fraser Cove club as a location of interest with close contacts prior to any risk assessment being completed is inconsistent with our past experience, and with the advice and guidelines on the Ministry of Health website.”

The MOH website states that those within the gym settings are classified as a close contact if 'you have spent time in an indoor space for more than one hour with a positive case”.

'The average length of time for the average gym goer is 45 minutes, and as we have not been able to verify the time the case was in the facility, classifying everyone as a close contact would cause the high majority of members and staff to self-isolate unnecessarily,” says a statement from CityFitness.

'CityFitness Fraser Cover is a facility in excess of 1700 square meters with an HVAC system that includes air extraction and rotation. Viral disinfecting has been a daily procedure since the beginning of the pandemic and previous exposure events in other facilities have not led to single case of onward transmission.

'We have access control and CCTV systems that enable us to monitor where a potentially infectious person has been and which staff or members they have come in contact with to more precisely identify those at risk.

'We will continue to work with the Ministry of Health to ensure the risk to any of our staff and members is identified and managed appropriately.”
