The Ministry of Health have updated the location of interest for Polo in the Bay at Mount Maunganui with more details.
The ‘general admission area polo lounge bar patrons' is the area identified as a Location of Interest.
The Ministry of Health says suspected Omicron cases were among a large number of people who went to the polo event at the Trustpower Baypark Stadium in Tauranga on Saturday, January 22 between 1pm and 6.15pm.
The Ministry says it isn't able to disclose details around how many cases attended the event due to privacy, however, Baypark CEO Chad Hooker told Stuff he understood it was linked to one patron.
The person was at the event between 1pm and 6.15pm on Saturday, January 22 at the Trustpower Baypark stadium.
'We understand at this stage only one patron had Covid and was in the general admissions area,” says Chad.
He says 1500 people attended the sporting event and 800 were in general admission.
He says the event was held when Bay of Plenty was in the orange traffic light setting, and all ticket holders had to show their vaccine passes before entry.
All ticket holders were being notified by email, he says.
'At this stage we don't know the extent of exposure, but we have been advised anyone in the bar area is being treated as a close-contact.”
Polo in the Bay organisers have posted health advice to their Facebook page.
'The guidance is that everyone who attended Polo in the Bay in Mt Maunganui on January 22 must self-monitor for Covid-19 symptoms for 10 days after the date of exposure which is January 22,” writes an organiser of the event.
A close contact is considered to be anyone who visited either the main marquee bar or gin caravan bar, in the 'Polo Lawn' area.
Close contacts should self-isolate and get tested immediately.
Bar patrons in all other areas - private marquees and VIP pavilion - are considered casual contacts and must self-monitor for Covid-19 symptoms for ten days after the date of exposure.
The ministry's advice for those were at the event includes:
- Anyone who was at the bar during this time is a close contact and is being asked to self-isolate and get tested immediately.
- Anyone who was at the stadium at this time but not the bar is a casual contact and needs to self-monitor for Covid-19 symptoms for 10 days after exposure. If symptoms develop, get a test and stay at home until you get a negative test result.
If you feel unwell, please stay at home and call Healthline on 0800 358 5453.
The event has not yet been linked to the Omicron outbreak, however, the transmissible virus is already in the community.
A parent with Omicron visited a Tauranga early childhood centre, Beststart Pyes Pa while 'likely infectious” on January 19, leaving 74 close contacts.
