A school in the Bay of Plenty has moved to offsite learning after a Covid-19 scare.
Pongakawa School has moved to the learning method after advice from the Medical Officer of Health and the Director of Education Bay of Plenty, according to a notice for parents from principal Craig Haggo.
The decision comes after travellers on a bus from Pukehina were considered close contacts of a Covid-19 case from February 1.
In the letter to parents, dated yesterday, Craig says there were simply 'too many variables” for onsite learning to continue and the decision was made.
He thanks students who got tested after being identified. Those students will be required to provide evidence of a negative result after a day ten test. Those who do not get tested will be required to isolate longer.
He also thanks parents and caregivers for their 'patience, understanding and support”.
'I have received some lovely texts, emails and calls and appreciate all the kindness.”
Craig also praises the family of the original case for their 'proactive” approach in getting tested so quickly and implored people to keep speculation to a minimum.
'Our thoughts and best wishes are with this whānau and just know we are thinking of you at this time,” he says.
'Pongakawa is a family and it is at times like this we stick together, hang tough and show loads of aroha.”
Craig says the school will open for onsite learning again from Monday, February 14.
