Two people accused of torching a building in Tauranga's Historic Village have appeared in court today.

Alexander James Burgess, 33, and Zachariah Phillips, 29, are each facing a charge of arson in connection to the fire which destroyed a building on the outskirts of the village back in June.

The building was used as a drop in centre for Gender Dynamix and RainbowYOUTH.

Burgess and Phillips were arrested following a police investigation into the fire.

According to the police summary of facts, the pair allegedly set the fire just before midnight on June 15.

Their actions, which allegedly include pushing a wheelie bin against the wall of the building and using turpentine to light a fire, were captured on CCTV.

During their appearance in Tauranga District Court today, Burgess pleaded not guilty and elected jury by trial.

He is due to appear for a case review hearing on September 28.

Phillips is yet to enter a plea and is next due to be in court on July 29.
