A man has been charged with murder following the death of a woman in Cambridge.

He was arrested in Te Aroha on Monday following a police operation in the Waikato town.

There was a large police presence in the town and residents were urged not to pick up any hitch-hikers.

Members of the public reported that police had blocked off Stanely Ave, and parents were called to pick up their kids from the local high school.

Police had been looking for an alleged offender in relation to the murder in Cambridge.

Emergency services were alerted to the woman's death at around 1.20am.

An address on Richmond Road was identified as an address of interest and on arrival, a woman was located dead at the property, says a police spokesperson.

In a statement released today, police say they have charged the alleged offender with murder.

'The 42-year-old man is due to appear in the Hamilton District Court today,” says a police spokesperson.

'Police wish to thank members of the public who provided information that assisted police as the incident unfolded yesterday.

'As this matter is before the court, police have no further comment.”
