A 20-year-old man is facing charges following a ram raid in Thames overnight.

Coromandel's CFM is reporting Thames Jewellers and neighbouring businesses suffered significant damage in a ram raid.

'Thames Police have arrested a 20-year-old man attempting to ram raid stores on Pollen Street, Thames last night,” the local radio station posted to its Facebook page.

'Officers were patrolling the street and were quick to the scene when they saw a vehicle ram into a shop, back up and then ram into another around 2.20am.

'The driver struggled to get out of the vehicle and ran off when he saw police.

'He was quickly taken into custody and is due to appear in Hamilton District Court today on charges of possession of an offensive weapon, burglary and driving while disqualified for a third or subsequent time.

'Damage to the Sunburst Cafe is also extensive.”
