Te Puna Station Road closed, residents concerned

Concerned Te Puna residents and motorists are reporting another slip on Te Puna Station Road this morning following the wet weekend.

This follows multiple reports of slips and expressions of frustration on the road this month, where one local resident has previously labelled the section of road a "continual public safety issue".

The segment of Te Puna Station Road where slips usually occur runs alongside the Wairoa River.

UPDATE 12.57pm: A Western Bay of Plenty District Council spokesperson says the northbound lane is blocked, and the road will likely be reopened tomorrow, November 1.

"The road is closed between Waipuna Hospice and Teihana Road whilst Council's maintenance contractor clears the site," says the spokesperson.

"Clearing will take some time and the road is expected to re-open on Tuesday, November 1 under temporary traffic management.

"The cycleway has also suffered damage from an under-slip failure and will remain closed until further notice.

"We recommend that everyone evoid Te Puna Station Road and detour via Clarke Road or Te Puna Road until Te Puna Station Road is reopened."

Earlier this month, one local commented "the bank is always slipping".

"There's so many times it's slipped and all they do is clear it up," says the local.

"Then with the next heavy rain it does it again."

Another resident, posting in a local Facebook community group, says traffic is building in the area following the slip this morning.

Close this road permanently

There was talk some years ago that this road would be closed permanently but that has gone quiet. It should be closed to help the flow of traffic on the SH2. Whilst that would cause issues for the residents, they can thank the rat runners / morons who think they are more important than the rest of us by using this route to queue jump, causing havoc on the SH2. I can never understand either, why traffic on the SH2 gives way to traffic coming out of this road - this is behaviour the Police need to look at - people stopping on the SH2 for no good reason!!
