Drink-drivers ‘not getting the message’“

A fun night out has turned into a very real hangover for 18 people caught drink-driving in the Bay of Plenty.

Police operated two checkpoints in Rotorua on Saturday, coinciding with SIX60's near-sold-out concert.

Some 968 drivers were stopped and breath-tested, of which 18 were found to be over the legal limit.

Seven of those were caught in a 75-minute period prior to the gig.

Three vehicles were impounded, and one disqualified driver was also apprehended.

The number of drink-drivers caught is pointlessly high, Bay of Plenty Police Sergeant Mark Holmes says.

On average, one out of every 53 drivers was over the limit.

'Free buses were provided for people heading to and from the gig, and Police had warned people to expect checkpoints before and after the concert," says Sergeant Mark Holmes.

"It's incredibly frustrating we caught so many people.

'We now have a number of people facing court hearings for getting behind the wheel when they shouldn't have," says Sergeant Mark Holmes.

'What people don't realise is the impacts a drink-driving conviction can have on their work life, their home life, and their ability to travel abroad.

"You can face difficulties getting insurance, credit, and work visas," says Sergeant Holmes.

'This is without mentioning the catastrophic damage a crash will do to the human body, and the trauma it inflicts on those who have to deal with that.

Sergeant Holmes says Impaired drivers are at a higher risk of crashing.

"We make no apology for checkpoints that get them off the road. 'If you've been drinking, don't assume you're ‘fine' to drive.

"It's a dumb choice to make.”

Road To Zero . . .

What an utter waste of money. Time for the powers that be to get their heads out of the sand. You cannot justify your job, your committee's, your spending and your paychecks with pie-in-sky dreams. Zero chance of road to zero. The road does not lead to zero. It will not, it cannot, it never has and it never will.

Disappointed.

Disappointed to hear Yadick is implying it is okay to drink and drive. It's these sort of people who are more dangerous than thos breaking the speed limit by a few kms. Same with drugged drivers. Good on the Police in this case. Should crush their vehicles.

I beg to differ with the Sergeant. I think people have got the message loud and clear. In the unlikely event that you will be caught upon committing a crime it is highly likely that there will be little consequences. The number of people who get discharged without conviction or a wet bus ticket is the norm. Because the Government and the Courts put perpetrators before victims every time, looking for any cultural or social excuse to remove responsibility from them to us. Message received, over.

I too (like Slim) disagree with the Sergeant. Using the figures here we can say around 2% of people are drinking and driving. That means that 98% DID get the message. Obviously, it would be better if 100% realized the reckless stupidity of drink driving, but 98% is not a bad slice. I also agree with Yadick, that Zero deaths on the road may well be unattainable. Nevertheless, we should TRY and attain it.

Just ban alcohol, for all the reasons we said no to cannabis and more. Tops the list from most dangerous drugs in the world for the harm it does to the community but its always the first thing you see when you go in the supermarket...

WHAAAAAT. Under NO CIRCUMSTANCES WHATSOEVER am I implying it is ok to drink and drive under any circumstances. (I'm sure you knew you'd draw a reply). Drink drivers are bloody idiots and cause tragedy for families beyond belief. Unfortunately drink driving is going to happen so long as there's alcohol and cars around (no valid excuse). This combined with idiotic, senseless driving and accidents in general, and genuine accidents are going to happen, makes Road To Zero nothing but pie in the sky. A total waste of money as it is unachievable.
