Mount Maunganui Lifeguard Service is recovering after a 'random fit of rage” which left three broken windows and a $2500 insurance bill.

Operations manager Ali Wieringa says the attack occurred shortly after 1.30am on Monday.

'We've invested in CCTV cameras to keep an eye on things when we're not there and on this occasion, it picked up someone smashing our windows using a rock,” says Ali.

The vandal struck three glass panels, says Ali, one of which sent glass cascading all over the clubhouse floor.

'They simply walked off after it happened- there was no intention other than to damage the building."

Ali says she's 'hugely disappointed” someone would vandalise the building.

'It's incredibly frustrating and disappointing that someone would do this to a voluntary organisation that's dedicated to helping save lives. Our weekend patrols have just started and we've already had a really busy few weeks and we definitely don't need to be sorting this sort of thing out on a Monday morning.”

While the club has insurance, the excess still means a $2500 bill, which Ali says is a blow to the charity.

'This comes away from the other important things we spend money on for lifeguarding. It's just so annoying, as we are trying to allocate funds in the right direction for looking after our community in the water, and now we have to cover unnecessary damage costs.”

Members of the Tauranga community support the Mount Maunganui Lifeguard Service to operate, says Ali, which makes it 'even more frustrating” money is being spent to fix a 'random act of vandalism”.

'There are a lot of better ways this money could be used. The wider community is frustrated by the news too, and have been incredibly supportive during this time.”

... when the culprit is caught, to ensure that they make full reparation to the club. Instead of a fine, they should be forced to work for the club until the debt is paid. With CCTV footage and an outraged community, I don't think much of their chances for getting away with it...

Scum!!

What a complete scumbag!! The Police should divert some of the roading resources to this sort of activity. Catch the prick and make him or her pay for the damage.....plus fines. Hopefully Labour lose the general election and National/ACT do something to combat crime in this country. Luxon's idea of military bootcamps works for me....but they need to be seriously tough conditions for this to work.

Very descriptive. I like it. I agree that boot camps are a good idea too however, there needs to be a consequence to defiance of camp rules. If for example it's a 2yr prison sentence or 1yr boot camp and the consequence of failing boot camp is off to prison to START your FULL sentence. Boot camp needs to be styled as a sentence with a positive outcome not a holiday camp in boots. Hard-core.
