New World Gate Pa reopens following fire

UPDATE 10.20am: New World Gate Pa is open following a fire earlier this morning which has left minimal damage.

EARLIER: Minimal damage is being reported after a fire at New World Gate Pa.

Firefighers were called to a second alarm fire at the supermarket on Cameron Road around 1am.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesperson says 11 fire crews attended the call.

Most were still there until after 5am.

The FENZ spokesperson says crews reported the fire to be "well involved" when they arrived at the scene.

In a post on social media this morning, the supermarket told customers that the store would be delayed in opening.

The team says the damage was minimal but they needed time to sort out a few things before opening.

The supermarket hopes to be open by 9am.
EARLIER:

A fire has been reported at New World in Gate Pa this morning.

Readers have contacted SunLive to report the fire and say it happened just before 1am.

One person reports that the left side of the roof went up after welding for seismic upgrades caused wooden trusses to catch fire. This is yet to be confirmed by authorities.

"Four fire crews were in attendance."

Another reader says he was looking at it from across the valley and could see "flames leaping from the building".

"It was massive. There was flames and smoke. It must be destroyed."

SunLive contacted Fire and Emergency New Zealand for more informaiton, but due to the ongoing firefighters' strike over resource issues, understaffing and low wages, they were not able to pass on any confirmed information.

Great save by FENZ. Great work guys. Could've been a Christmas disaster especially with high winds at the moment that would be spreading dangerous embers. We are grateful to you all and appreciate your work. THANK YOU.
