Update, 12.34pm: Two occupants of a car are in custody following the driver being recognised as someone on their wanted list, by sharp-eyed and quick-thinking police in a flow of traffic at Mount Maunganui .

"This morning at about 10.30am, Police observed a driver with a warrant for his arrest in a line of traffic on Hewletts Road, Mount Maunganui," says a police spokesperson.

"As an officer attempted to speak to the driver, the driver has rammed other vehicles out of the way with his car in an attempt to leave the area."

Police say fortunately there were no injuries to any members of the public or their own staff.

A SunLive reader at the scene reported that police were then in pursuit of the vehicle.

"Police chasing a black Chrysler 3000cc down Hewletts Road heading towards Papamoa way," says the SunLive reader.

"Two police cars following shortly behind the Chrysler which looked like it was going about 150ks."

The driver subsequently crashed his car on Golf Road. The driver and occupant of the car then fled on foot and were located shortly after and taken into custody.

"The driver is likely to face a number of charges,' says a police spokesperson.

Earlier, 10.34am: A SunLive reader is reporting that police are in pursuit of a vehicle at Mount Maunganui.

"Police chasing a black Chrysler 3000cc down Hewletts Road heading towards Papamoa way," says the SunLive reader.

"Two police cars following shortly behind the Chrysler which looked like it was going about 150ks."

Another SunLive reader reports that the vehicle was seen heading in the direction of Mount Maunganui.
