Children were among the seven people injured in a fatal crash in Bay of Plenty on Monday.

One person died in the two-vehicle collision on State Highway 2 in Athenree Gorge near Waihi Beach.

Seven others were injured, including two critically. All are now in stable condition.

Tauranga Hospital says three girls aged 8, 6 and 17 were taken there.

Waikato Hospital says it received three other patients from the scene and all four were now stable, though two remain in the High Dependency Unit.

Another patient is in Auckland Hospital in a serious but stable condition.
