Police are advising Thames Coast Road, Windy Point is closed "just north of Thames".

Motorists are also being warned to "stay off" roads in the area, due to the limited amount of diversions which could be also blocked by the current weather conditions.

"Due to current weather conditions a cliff has become unstable and is likely to collapse," says a police spokesperson.

"Police advise people to stay off the roads, if possible, as the only diversion is State Highway 25A Kopu - Hikua which could be obstructed by current weather conditions."

This comes as wild weather came down on the region over the last week, with multiple watches and warnings being put in place during the downpour.
